It rains, off and on
Upon a grey Parthenon weeping
acid tears down disfigured marble brought
streaking. Oh! Why have you wrought
This onslaught of grime
Upon my temple once sublime
Crime! cried Athene Parthenos,
In pathos, goddess of wisdom divine
daughter of Zeus, shrieking
Patron of Athens, supine
in grief and disdain, freaking
It snows now and then
Thrice a century, and when the temple gleams,
she screams with pride, sings sweet refrain
Athena smiles again
